Hermann Wilhelm Göring (born January 12, 1893, in Rosenheim; died October 15, 1946, in Nuremberg) was a German National Socialist politician and war criminal. In mid-1933, he became Reich Minister of Aviation (initially without an official ministry), and from May 1935, he served as Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe. In 1936 and 1937, respectively, he assumed leadership of the German economy and the Reich Ministry of Economics. Göring had previously gained some renown during World War I as a fighter pilot decorated with the *Pour le Mérite*. He participated in the Hitler Putsch in Munich in November 1923 and played a key role in the rise of the NSDAP. In August 1932, he was elected President of the Reichstag. On the day the Nazis seized power, Adolf Hitler appointed him Reich Minister without Portfolio, Reich Commissioner for Aviation, and Reich Commissioner for the Prussian Ministry of the Interior. On April 11, 1933, Göring also became Minister-President of Prussia. In these latter two roles, Göring was instrumental in the *Gleichschaltung* (forcible coordination) and the persecution of the opposition, which he directed with extreme brutality. He was responsible for founding the Gestapo and establishing the first concentration camps starting in 1933. From October 1936, as Plenipotentiary for the Four-Year Plan, he drove the further rearmament of the Wehrmacht in preparation for a war of aggression. He directed measures related to the *Anschluss* of Austria, through which Austrian and German National Socialists orchestrated Austria's incorporation into the Nazi state in March 1938. On the night of March 12, 1938—following his telephoned threats and prior to the entry of German troops—Austrian National Socialists ousted the Austro-fascist regime of the *Ständestaat*. He systematically organized economic measures against Jews and, on November 12, 1938, issued the decree excluding Jews from German economic life. Both at home and abroad, Göring was regarded as one of the most influential Nazi politicians until the end of the war. In reality, however, historical research has shown that—despite holding a multitude of offices and titles—he lost key powers to rival Nazi officials such as Heinrich Himmler and Joseph Goebbels both before and during the war. As head of the Luftwaffe, Göring fell into disrepute due to the defeat in the Battle of Britain (mid-1940 to early 1941), the onset of devastating Allied bombing raids on German territory, and the failure of the airlift during the Battle of Stalingrad (late 1942). On July 31, 1941, he commissioned Reinhard Heydrich to organize the genocide of European Jews (the Holocaust)—referred to in Nazi terminology by the euphemism "Final Solution to the Jewish Question." From 1942–43 onwards (a turning point in the war), Göring increasingly withdrew into private life—driven by both internal party pressure and his own inclinations—and cultivated a decadent, luxurious lifestyle. From that time on, he performed many of his official duties merely in a ceremonial capacity, if at all. Göring was one of the twenty-four defendants in the Nuremberg Trial of Major War Criminals before the International Military Tribunal. He was an "amiable psychopath," as described by the court-appointed prison psychologist Gustave Gilbert, who spoke with him daily.[1] On October 1, 1946, he was found guilty on all four counts (conspiracy against world peace; planning, initiating, and waging a war of aggression; crimes against the laws of war; crimes against humanity) and sentenced to death by hanging. He evaded the execution of the sentence by committing suicide on the eve of his execution.
