SVR Zaslon Russian Spetsnaz in Damascus - Limited Version - in 1/6 scale
Saslon (Zasalon) - (screen / barrier) is a special unit of the Russian foreign intelligence service SVR. Its existence was denied by the Russian state until 2014 and the unit is not present in public. The Saslon unit was founded on March 23, 1997, but only became operational in 1998 with a strength of around 300 men. The unit is said to belong to the seventh department of the SVR Self-Defense Center. In 2014, then-Russian Vice President Dmitry Rogozin posted a photo on Twitter in a now-deleted post that showed him with five men whose faces had been blurred out. In the post, he thanked the “officials of the Saslon unit” who would ensure security in Lebanon and Syria.
IRAK: During the 2003 Iraq War (Third Gulf War), Russia deployed two Saslon groups in Baghdad to protect the Russian ambassador and sensitive documents in his embassy. After the war, Saslon was also used to spy against high-ranking Iraqi government officials. On June 3, 2006, two members of Saslon, along with three Russian Embassy employees, were attacked by an armed group calling themselves the "Shura Mujahadeen Council". During the attack, one Saslon member was shot, the second Saslon member (Oleg Fodseyev) and the three embassy members were taken hostage. On June 19 (16 days after the attack), the hostage takers demanded the immediate release of Chechen fighters and the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya within 48 hours. After the deadline expired, all four hostages were shot and beheaded after two days. Fodseyev's body was found in 2012 and buried in Moscow.
SYRIA: According to some sources, Russian President Vladimir Putin moved Saslon units to the Syrian capital Damascus in May 2013 to protect Bashar al-Assad and other high-ranking government officials.
