SS Fallschirmjager Bataillon 600 - Der Untergang 1945

The SS Parachute Battalion 500 (short: SS-Fsjg.-Batl. 500; from October 1944 SS Parachute Battalion 600) was the only airborne unit of the Waffen-SS and a so-called "probationary battalion". It was an SS special unit for suppressing armed resistance against the Nazi occupation regime (so-called "fighting partisans").

On October 1, 1944, the SS Parachute Battalion 500 was disbanded. The approximately 90 survivors were transferred to Deutsch-Wagram, where they were integrated into the newly formed SS Parachute Battalion 600 (short: SS-Fsjg.-Batl. 600). Shortly afterwards, parts of the battalion were deployed in Hungary in "Operation Panzerfaust", which was intended to prevent Reich Regent Admiral Miklós Horthy from agreeing a Hungarian armistice with the Soviet Union. On October 15, 1944, a commando kidnapped Horthy's son Niklaus and thereby blackmailed his father into abdicating.

The battalion was subsequently reorganized in Neustrelitz for a month and filled up to around 1,000 men. On November 10, 1944, it was incorporated into the SS fighter units. In December 1944, parts of the battalion were placed under Otto Skorzeny's Panzer Brigade 150, which was to carry out Operation Greif during the Battle of the Bulge. It was an attempt to create unrest in the Allied ranks behind the front using a group dressed and equipped as a US unit. The intention was known to the US authorities at an early stage, however. The "spectacular costume piece on the edge of the Ardennes offensive" or the "desperate arabesque" (Klaus-Dietmar Henke) failed completely on the first attempt, and a second attempt had no significant impact despite high losses.

The remaining units of the battalion were involved in rearguard action in northern Germany. In the end, the SS Parachute Battalion 500/600 was practically completely wiped out after only eighteen months of existence. At the beginning of May 1945, the remnants of the battalion surrendered to American troops in northern Lower Saxony, in the Weser Triangle area. © Wikipedia
